 Mandav is known, not only for its engineering skills in water management and archaeological talent but also for the immense love that Baz Bahadur had for his beloved Rani Rupmati. Malik Bayezid, after the death of his father Shujaat Khan, became the Sultan of Malwa and was known as Baz Bahadur. He was skilled in swordsmanship and was a proficient musician. Raag Deepak. It is said that when he sang Raag Deepak the earthen lamps used to light up without any human effort. After losing a battle with Rani Durgavati of Gondwana he settled in Mandav and immersed himself in music completely. All of Mandav swayed with the music of Baz Bahadur and Rani Rupmati. Baz Bahadur Palace stands witness to the soul-stirring music of Baz Bahadur and his queen Rani Rupmati and the enchanting episodes of their love.

An architectural marvel, Baz Bahadur Palace was cons tructed on the slope beneath the Rupmati Pavilion by Nasiruddin Khilji in 1508. There are 40 steps that lead to the arched main gate of the palace. After entering. the first thing that you see are rooms for the guards, from here the path leads to an outer courtyard which has big and small rooms on all four sides and a big pool in the centre. There is a beautiful baradari (A pavilion with 12 doors) of poles on its northern end. The eastern and western sides are alike with square rooms. The southern side also has two rooms, the doors of which lead to another courtyard behindthem. Similar to the first courtyard, this one also has big and small rooms that were possibly made for the attendants. There are stairs built along the walls to separate this area from the main premises. There are two beautiful umbrella-shaped structures on the palace's terrace, from where you get a captivating view of Mandav's valley. According to the local lore, the palace had a marvellous acoustic system whereby a person standing in a specific location in the premises could be heard in the inner room. The water management of this palace is as amazing as the one in Rupmati Palace.

There goes a legend that Akbar's general Adam Khan set his eyes on the lovely Rani Rupmati and wanted her to be a part of his harem. When Rani Rupmati came to know about the evil intention of Adam Khan, she ended her life by swallowing a diamond. This event is said to have taken place in this very palace. ( Source: MTPC, Dhar )

अपने पिता शुजाअत खाँ की मृत्यु के बाद मलिक बायजीद, बाज बहादुर के नाम से मालवा का सुल्तान बना। वह जितना तलवारबाजी में कुशल था, उतनी ही उसमें संगीत की गहराई थी। राग दीपक का वह उस्ताद था। बाज बहादुर के बारे में कहा जाता है कि जब वह राग दीपक की तान छेड़ता था, तो दीपक जल जाया करते थे। गोंडवाना की रानी दुर्गावती से युध्द में हारने के बाद, बाज बहादुर माण्डव आकर पूरी तरह से संगीत में मगन हो गया। रानी रूपमती और बाज बहादुर के संगीत से पूरा माण्डव झूमने लगा जिसका साक्षी बना, बाज बहादुर महल। खूबसूरत स्थापत्य कला का उदहारण और रूपमती  मंडप के ठीक नीचे पहाड़ी ढलान पर बने, बाज बहादुर महल का निर्माण सन् 1508 में नासिरुद्दीन खिलजी ने कराया था। मेहराबदार छत से ढके हुए इसके मुख्य द्वार पर पहुँचने के लिए 40 चौड़ी सीढ़ियाँ है। मुख्य द्वार पर पहुँचते ही पहला सामना पहरेदारों के लिए बने कक्षों से होता है। यह रास्ता आगे जा कर एक बाहरी आँगन में मिल जाता है, जिसके चारों ओर छोटे-बड़े कमरे और बीच में एक बड़ा सा कुंड बना हुआ है। उत्तरी छोर पर खूबसूरत खम्भों वाली बारादरी पार एक अष्टकोणीय मंडप को देखकर लगता है, जैसे कोई गहराई में झाँक रहा हो।

इस परिसर का पूर्वी और पश्चिमी सिरा समान है, जहाँ वर्गाकार कमरे बने हुए हैं। दक्षिण दिशा में भी दो कमरे बने हुए हैं, जिनके द्वार पीछे बने एक अन्य आँगन तक पहुँचाते हैं। इस आँगन का निर्माण सम्भवतः महल के परिचरों के लिए किया गया होगा। पहले आँगन के भाँति यह भी छोटे-बड़े कमरो से घिरा हुआ है। इस परिसर को मुख्य परिसर से अलग करने के लिए दीवारों के सहारे सीढ़ियाँ बनाई गयी है, जो ऊपर छत तक जाती हैं। छत पर बनी दो आकर्षक छतरियों से माण्डव की खूबसूरत वादियों का मनोरम नज़ारा, देखते ही बनता है। इस महल के बारे में कहा जाता है कि इसमें ऐसी ध्वनि तकनीक का प्रयोग किया गया है, जिसके अनुसार अगर एक खास स्थान से कुछ कहा जाए, तो अन्दर बने कमरो में स्पष्ट सुना जा सकता है। रूपमती महल की तरह, इस महल का भी जल प्रबंधन देखने योग्य है। इस महल से एक और बात जुड़ी हुई है कि जब अकबर के सेनापति आदम खाँ ने माण्डव को जीतने के बाद, रानी रूपमती को अपने हरम में शामिल करने की कोशिश की, तो रानी रूपमती ने इसी महल में हीरा निगल कर अपने प्राण त्याग दिए थे। ( Source: MTPC, Dhar )
