Hathi Pol Darwaza Mandu

HATHI POL DARWAZA

The northern gate of the royal premises is known as Hathi Pol Darwaza. The gate has two pedestals on both sides which have elephant statues on them. This is where the gate gets its name from. The elephant statues have no trunks or upper torso, only the lower body. On top of both sides of the wall,
canons were kept on a foundation of turrets. There were small rooms here for mercenaries. The road below the gate is covered with the ceiling. It is said that this gate was built around or after the 16th century and that Mughal ruler Akbar ordered the construction of similar elephant statues at the entry
gate of Agra Fort after his victory over Chittor. This gate at Agra Fort is mentioned by the name of Hathi Pol Darwaza on an inscription here.

हाथी पोल दरवाज़ा

शाही परिसर के उत्तरी दरवाजे को हाथी पोल दरवाज़ा कहा जाता है। इस दरवाजे के दोना और कबूतर में हाथी की मूर्ति बने होने से इसका नाम हाथी पोल दरवाज़ा पड़ा| हाथी के पतला का आकार बिना सूट और धढ़ का है। पुतलों में हाथी के सिर्फ पैर तथा पेट का निचला हिस्सा दिखाई देता है। दरवाजे के दोनों ओर दीवारों के ऊपर, आधार वाले गोल बुर्ज बनाये गए हैं, जिनपर तोपें सखी जाती थी। इस दरवाज़े में भी प्रहरियों के लिए छोटे-छोटे
कमरे बनाये गए हैं। इस दरवाजे के नीचे से निकलने वाला रास्ता छत से ढका हआ है। इस दरवाजे के निर्माण को 16वीं शताब्दी या उसके बाद का बताया जाता है। इस दरवाज़े के सम्बन्ध में कहते हैं कि मुगल बादशाह अकबर ने चित्तौड़ जीतने के बाद, इसी प्रकार के दो हाथियों के पत्रों का निर्माण, आगरा किले के प्रवेश द्वार पर करवाया था। आगरा किले के इसी दरवाजे का उल्लेख, समकालीन लेखों में हत्यापोल दरवाजे के नाम से मिलता है।
